The toilet cubicle in your office might appear harmless. In reality, however, behind that cubicle door lies a hidden threat to workplace hygiene: the spread of germs through inadequate toilet hygiene practices. Research shows that toilets in office spaces are one of the most significant contributors to germ transmission. Whether it’s through “toilet sneeze”, cross contamination or improper ventilation, inadequate cubicle hygiene can contribute to high rates of employee illness, absenteeism and an unfavourable work climate.
“Toilet sneeze” occurs every time a toilet is flushed, especially if the lid is left open. Invisible to the eye, the flush can propel droplets containing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens up to six feet into the air. Some of these droplets may be large and can settle on surfaces such as toilet seats, flush handles, cubicle walls, door handles, floors, and on hands if people are nearby. Other smaller droplets can remain airborne and travel beyond the washroom when the door opens or via ventilation systems. Research has shown that pathogens such as E. coli, norovirus, and influenza are present in “toilet sneeze” and can survive on surfaces for hours — sometimes even days. If not properly cleaned and maintained, toilet cubicles can become long-term reservoirs of infection.
It’s not just what’s in the bowl that matters — the entire cubicle is a potential breeding ground for bacteria. From toilet paper dispensers and flush buttons to door locks and sanitary bins, almost every touchpoint in a cubicle can carry germs from one user to the next.
High Usage Frequency: In busy workplaces, washrooms may serve dozens or even hundreds of people daily. Without regular cleaning and disinfection, surfaces can quickly become contaminated.
Close Contact: Toilet cubicles are small, enclosed spaces. This means airborne pathogens have limited space to disperse and may linger longer on surfaces.
Cross-Contamination: Once germs are on a person’s hands, they can spread throughout the office — onto keyboards, phones, door handles, and communal kitchen areas.
We recommend an integrated approach to reduce the spread of germs from the cubicle:
When toilet cubicles are properly maintained, they do more than just keep the space clean — they create a workplace culture that values health and respect. In an age where health and safety have become non-negotiable, employers have a duty of care to ensure that washrooms are hygienic to protect staff and visitors alike.
