World Toilet Day is marked on November 19th every year to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and the importance of proper toilet hygiene. For some parts of the world, it is hard to imagine that large populations still lack access to basic sanitation – 3.6 billion people to be exact. The significance of World Toilet Day, which was first held in 2001, cannot be overstated as the UN, Oxfam and other global agencies call for healthier and safer hygiene across the world.
Access to safe sanitation is a basic human right and yet poor sanitation claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of lives every year by contributing to the spread of diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid. World Toilet Day helps to bring awareness to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all by 2030. Despite progress, millions of people still live without basic toilet facilities, highlighting the need for accelerated action.
The World Toilet Day 2024 theme is “sanitation for peace”. According to the United Nations, “this essential space, at the centre of our lives, should be safe and secure. But for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters and neglect.” When sanitation services are damaged or destroyed, disease spreads and continues to impoverish entire communities with females being the most adversely affected. This year’s theme advocates for the development and protection of resilient sanitation services that can safeguard communities and allow them to thrive.
